THE SECOND MIDDLESEX DISTRICT: WHERE I'LL SERVE

Image source: United States Census Bureau - US Census Bureau, 2018 State Legislative District Reference Maps

The Second Middlesex District is home to approximately 175,000 residents across Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, and Winchester. On the surface, these communities look different, a global innovation hub, one of New England's most densely populated cities, family-centered neighborhoods, and an engaged suburban community. But look closer and you find the same fundamental concerns: housing costs that push families out of communities they love, schools that need investment, a climate crisis that demands action, and a desire for government that actually listens. I've lived in Somerville and now live in Winchester. I've spent my career working across all four communities. I'm running to represent all of us.

WHAT UNITES US

Despite our differences, these four communities share fundamental challenges and values:

  • We all struggle with affordability - whether rent or property taxes, healthcare or childcare, education or groceries, costs have outpaced income

  • We all want excellent schools - for our children and grandchildren to have opportunities we had, or opportunities we wished we'd had

  • We all recognize climate urgency - and want leadership that accelerates solutions rather than retreats from commitments

  • We all need good jobs and pathways to opportunity - whether in tech or trades, service industries or innovation economy

  • We all value diversity and inclusion - and reject policies that divide us or discriminate

  • We all want transparent, accountable government - that listens to constituents and acts with integrity

The community breakdowns below reflect the unique strengths and challenges of each part of the district. But the thread running through all of them is the same: families who work hard, care about their neighbors, and deserve a senator who fights for them.

COMMUNITIES I'LL SERVE

Cambridge

What Makes Cambridge Unique: Cambridge is a global center of innovation, home to MIT, Harvard and other colleges, biotechnology companies, and technology firms that drive Massachusetts' economy. The district includes Ward 7, Precinct 1, Ward 8, Precinct 1, and all of Ward 10 and Ward 11, areas with incredible diversity of residents, businesses, and institutions.

Key Challenges:

  • Housing costs that push out long-time residents and working families

  • Transit connectivity and pedestrian/bicycle safety

  • Balance between innovation economy growth and community character

  • Ensuring economic vitality benefits all residents

What I Bring: I've spent over two decades as a leader in Massachusetts' innovation economy. I understand how to make sure it creates opportunity for everyone, not just those already at the table.

Medford

What Makes Medford Unique: Medford is a city of family neighborhoods, strong schools, active civic life, and residents deeply invested in their community. Home to Tufts University and diverse populations including long-established families and recent immigrants, with new connectivity and opportunity by the arrival of the Green Line Extension to Tufts..

Key Challenges:

  • Housing affordability and property tax pressures on homeowners

  • School funding and facilities to maintain educational excellence

  • Aging infrastructure and public safety (traffic, roads, utilities)

  • Climate resilience and green space preservation

What I Bring: Medford's challenges, school funding, infrastructure, housing pressure, commercial development are exactly the kind of interconnected systems problems I've spent my career solving.

Somerville

What Makes Somerville Unique: Somerville is one of the most densely populated cities in New England, with incredible diversity, strong progressive values, innovative policies, and a civic culture of engagement. The Green Line Extension has transformed connectivity and opportunity.

Key Challenges:

  • Affordability crisis displacing long-time residents and families

  • School overcrowding and facility needs from rapid growth

  • Infrastructure strain from density (transit, roads, utilities)

  • Preserving community diversity and character amid development pressure

What I Bring: I lived in Somerville. I understand the affordability crisis isn't abstract here, it's neighbors being priced out of communities they built. I'll fight for policies that let people stay.

Winchester

What Makes Winchester Unique: Winchester is a suburban community known for excellent schools, town meeting governance, strong civic engagement, and residents committed to environmental sustainability. The district includes Precincts 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Winchester.

Key Challenges:

  • Maintaining excellent schools while managing budget pressures

  • Ensuring all residents can afford to live in Winchester (property taxes, housing costs)

  • Climate action and accelerating clean energy transition across town facilities

  • Infrastructure investment (roads, town facilities, long-term capital planning)

What I Bring: I serve Winchester on the School Committee and know its challenges from the inside. I also know that Winchester's future is tied to the health of the whole district, and I'll represent that bigger picture.
